Abstract:   Highlighting the value of our‘natural capital’, this book makes it clear that unless development is distinguished from economic growth, the tum-off towards sustainable development will be missed. It indicates that too many warning signs have already been ignored suggesting that, in North and South alike, we are moving in the wrong direction and that there may be few, if any, short-cuts back. Situated at the crossroads of culture, science, communication and education, UNESCO has long been a proponent of the interdisciplinary approach recommended by the World Commission on Environment and Development. There is no doubt that such an approach, further elaborated here, is necessary to deal with the complex problems of environment and development. ’ This publication has been produced to reinforce the concept of ecological economics as the world prepares for the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development to be held in Brazil. By focusing on key issues that need to be further explored in order to achieve a more equitable and environmentally sustainable economy, I am confident that it will make a valuable contribution to this essential objective.
